YUCK!- they use artificial colors and flavors- at least since partnering with something called "Bornay Desserts." I just got a scoop of the "strawberry" at Flossmoor Station Ice Cream...it's an unnatural, chemically enhanced pink color (think Pepto Bismol) with absolutely no real strawberries anywhere in it. The taste is also rather suspicious. Why bother, if you're going to use artificial ingredients? My mom ordered the cappucino- she said it tasted like chocolate- not a hint of coffee flavor. We asked the clerk twice and she said that others had complained, as well. Um, because maybe it IS chocolate? The one who didn't complain was my dad, who got raspberry sorbet, and their website calls it "natural," so maybe it actually contains real raspberries. I'd love to see their ingredient list. Last time for Al Gelato with us.

Gelato Date I went on a date last night and we went to Francesca's on Taylor Street for gelato. My date recalled that I share his adoration for Pistachio flavored ice cream/gelato and he introduced me to the best I've ever had; even counting the pistachio gelato I've tasted in Italy. It's creamy texture and nutty flavor is to die for, far outperforming the Bobtail Ice Cream Co. Pistachio ice cream I've tried. Thanks to James S. (below) I now know where to get my new favorite--there is a location that serves Al Gelato down the street from my office. I hope that the Pear Ice comes back on the scene because it sounds divine. Oh, and the date, it was really fun--he was charming as ever, held great conversation, and he smelled great; I give him a 3.5--he would have gotten a 5 had he been on time :)

This is the most beautiful gelato. Soft and dense with the deepest, truest flavors I've ever tasted. The pistachio is so intense, it's aromatic, as is the coconut. The chocolate tastes nothing like American chocolate ice cream, the contrast is sharp when you take your first spoonful. Their white chocolate is the only ice cream I've ever tasted that actually tastes like white chocolate. My sister's favorite is the banana fudge, and you can't get her near any other banana ice cream. My absolute favorite, though, is the burnt sugar. Darkly sweet, nuanced, with just the slightest bitterness. Whenever I'm at a Francesca's, it's the first thing I check for on the dessert menu. If I don't see it, I ask just to make sure. Available in restaurants and by mail order.

Reviewer Azulina N. is right on. This is my favorite gelato and by far the best pistachio anything I've ever eaten. However, please realize that this Belden address is for the manufacturing plant. I say this because they used to have their own shop (called Cafe Al Gelato, I believe) and some who rememer that shop might be confused seeing this address if they don't read carefully. I did not read carefully and I called the number asking for their hours and was very kindly set straight. Here is the link to the page on their website where they list the locations that carry the fantastic Al Gelato - algelato.com/cafe.html I was also told they have been asked by the Francesca restaurants to make their Pear Ice again this year. I breifly owned a coffee/dessert shop back in the late 90's and carried the Pear Ice(as well as the pistachio and the spumoni among others) and thought it was outstanding (especially considering what I thought was the relative dearth of pear desserts at that time). From my memory it had a great natural pear flavor, so it's not overpowering. It was refreshingly cool and just as sweet as a pear ice should be. Anyway, if they indeed do end up making that flavor again, I recommend you try it if in the mood for some pear refreshment. It was truly exceptional and I don't think they've made it for a while so definitely support it if you can. It sounds like it will be at the Francesca's on Taylor at the very least if they do make it (check the link above to call the restuarants and check if it is summertime). DON'T FORGET TO TRY THE PISTACHIO IF YOU ARE A PISTACHIO FAN. Damn it feels good to 5-star my favorite stuff. Thank you, Yelp.

The company seems a little shady. I won a contest with a local film festival and Al Gelato completely back out of their end of the deal. It resulted in a lot of un-returned phone calls and empty promises. I wish I had a better experience with the company that would make me want to be a customer.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
